I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Tad Morose - 2002 Matters Of The Dark

TAD MOROSE - MATTERS OF THE DARK (2002, CENTURY MEDIA)
Urban Breed - vocals
Christer Andersson - guitars
Daniel Olsson - guitars
Anders Modd - bass
Peter Moren - bass

Background
Swedish power metal experts Tad Morose have been around for a while now, going all the way back to 1991 with founder Christer Andersson the only remaining original. I recall back in the mid 90's seeing Morose's 'Sender Of Thoughts' CD sitting on the shelf of the metal section at the local record store for what seemed like years, but passing it up because it looked like dodgy gothic metal. Their record label didn't help, belonging to Borje Forsberg's Black Mark, purveyors of some oftenly appalling thrash and death metal. Maybe I should have investigated as 'Matters Of The Dark' is an often brilliant piece of power metal which banishes the thought of an often repetitive genre. The above lineup has now remained constant since 1998, their first album for Century Media being 2001's 'Undead.'

The Songs
One thing that sets Tad Morose apart is that there is rarely a need to compare them to any other power metal act. Here is a band with a sound all their own, relying on the basic premises of metal, guitars, drums and vocals combined with melody, to distance themselves from the pack. 'Sword Of Retribution' is a perfect, eye catching opener, with hints of Iron Maiden, certainly in Breed's Bruce Dickinson warble, something which must be noted. But this is negated because the music is so pleasing to the ear, very uplifting with soaring riffs and harmonies. Not overwhelmingly heavy though, a matter resolved instantly by the title track, neat full speed heavy metal, something you want to bang your head to, instead of just sitting there. This is true also of 'Another Way', with its melodic riffs recalling the glory days of the 80's, while maintaining a frenetic pace, not once easing up. Another key moment is 'Reason Of The Ghost', which is slower, with a naggingly melodic riff in the latter stages backed up by some wicked chants. It seems superflous to describe every track, they are all top notch, the individual displays by all five members of the highest standards.

In Summary
Tad Morose's problem it appears is that they have been unable to break out of the cult favourites stage, recognised by many as a leading light of their genre, but without the mainstream breakthrough or publicity that other European acts currently court. Reportedly at work on their latest album, it will have to go some way to top this 2002 release, power metal at its best in the modern era.
