Dream Evil - 2002 Dragonslayer

Fredrik Nordstrom - guitars, keyboards
Gus G - guitars
Niklas Isfeldt - vocals
Peter Stalfors - bass
Snowy Shaw - drums

Dream Evil were founded in 1999 by producer extraordinaire Fredrik Nordstrom (Hammerfall, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Spiritual Beggars etc.) and up-n-coming Greek guitar god Gus G (Mystic Prophecy, Firewind). Fredrik then enlisted vocalist Niklas Isfeldt, the two having worked together on the first two Hammerfall albums where Niklas provided backing vocals. Isfeldt brought with him long time friend and bass player Peter Stalfors, who had also been involved in the first Hammerfall album. To fill the drum spot they found none other than the legendary Snowy Shaw (Ex-King Diamond, Mercyful Fate). In 2001, with the lineup finalised, Dream Evil began work on their debut 'Dragonslayer'.

The Songs
Taking into account that this was initially Fredrik Nordstrom's baby, there is no hint of Dream Evil being a 'project'. This is one hell of a tight band and the production is the best I've heard for many a while (not surprising with Fredrik at the helm). Having been involved with the likes of Dimmu Borgir and In Flames, and the ghoulish album cover, I was expecting a dark and heavy approach. Thankfully there are no cookie monster vocals in sight, just one of the most melodic metal albums I've heard. Dream Evil are right up there with the the best of them in the melodic metal genre. Though this is their first album, 'Dragonslayer' exhibits many of the important ingredients for success.

In Summary
The vocal performance of Niklas Isfeldt is awesome. Although he has been singing lead for many years now I believe this will be the first time many of you will have heard him. There's a slight hint of an accent but his voice is strong and clear, very much like that of former Nocturnal Rites singer Anders Zackrisson. It's simply criminal that a vocalist of this talent is doing backing vocals for the big guns when he has a better voice than many of today's metal vocalists. The guitar work by Fredrik and Gus is fantastic. In the first few songs the riffs are reminiscent of Hammerfall and Nocturnal Rites, while the last tracks are more in a hard rock vein like fellow Scandinavians Million. All the lead breaks are melodic and scorching. For a number of years Fredrik Nordstrom had envisioned creating his own music with talented musicians. The fruit of that vision is 'Dragonslayer' and it is very tasty indeed.
