Background
This quintet come from Finland, and are heavily into the likes of
Queensryche and
Iron Maiden.. and you know what? It's damned good. Relatively youthful, these boys are doing their best to keep traditional HM alive and kicking, in this age of dross and do-goodiness. Formed in 1998, the 'mechanized ones' have been turning their cogs over slowly but surely, culminating in a record deal with Finnish label Dynamic Arts Records at the end of 2001. To these ears, if you mix the Scandi guitar-power of bands like
Pole Position or
Aces High, and mix it with the aforementioned duo of Ryche and Maiden, then this is where the Machine Men stop the clock.
The Songs
Leading off with 'Men Inside The Machine', we are reminded of the
Iron Maiden siutation, with Parviainen doing his best
Bruce Dickinson gig. It's good though, with the guitars rich and full in the mix. 'Eye Of The Truth' struts along in a similar vein to Skid Row's 'Youth Gone Wild', especially on the chorus. 'The Slave Trade' has a darker side, like
Savatage in their deeper moments. 'Enjoy Insanity' though keeping with the 80's style metal that prevails, shows a modern edge. Machine Men finish off with a cover of the
Iron Maiden staple.. 'Aces High', and it's very well done too. Hard to pick the difference, though I'm sure Maiden fans will find plenty!
In Summary
A lot of promise here, and a band destined to go further. Machine Men sit quite nicely among the export quality of the Finnish flock. Not as heavy as contemporaries
Sinergy,
Requiem or
Nightwish, but definitely not as wimpy as the superb
Urban Tale. Machine Men anchor themselves comfortably within the HM genre, and give Finland another arrow in their musical quiver.
