Background
Originating from Melbourne, this 6 piece came to prominence during 1992 with this diverse slice of melodic rock. Released on the fairly bigtime label East/West this got quite a bit of airplay down under, though I'm not sure how it was received elsewhere around the world. The bands strengths lies in the creative songwriting talent of Morgenthaler, Langford and Panetta, whom contribute to all the songs. As I said before, it's diverse, and is a rich tapestry of influences all of which are melodic in one form or another. Some of their songs are described as below.

The Songs
Album opener 'The Sun Still Shines' moves in that same territory as occupied by the likes of Ochsenknecht or Dan Lucas for that matter, while 'Faith In Love' is a very commercial track tailor made for radio and an obvious contender for a single. 'My Heart Just Bleeds' has INXS influences throughout though the keyboard work in the middle section is very AOR. 'Big Thing' also has that INXS feel. 'Slow Down' has that same heavy beat feel a la Robert Hart's Distance. For me however, the album's best moment is the luscious 'After The Flood', simmering in subtle keyboards and subtle guitar lines. Glorious! The ballad 'Not Turning Back' is sort of aimless while the next track 'Knocking Down The Fences' rocks up the house a bit. A couple of other great tracks are the bouncy 'Broken Glass' with Morgenthaler's vocals heading into Glen Burtnick country, as does 'When Will I See You Again'. The album closer 'The Night Goes On' winds down precedings where the keyboards descend on you like a warm blanket.

In Summary
Among Thieves only released this one album, so one can assume that history has recorded this effort as a commercial flop, despite it being quite classy. The only history beyond this album which is known is that a project called Black Rain was to have featured Anton Morgenthaler and Roxus axe man Dragan Stanic. Nothing has ever eventuated from this collaboration as far as I'm aware.
