Originally calling themselves Candy Rock this British trio, later under the ridiculously generic moniker of Canned Rock had balls enough to cover Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' on live television no less and supposedly went down a storm. Considering Queen could never pull it off live, you got to give Canned Rock credit for having enough blind ambition to try anything. The truth is the group was quite popular on the Air Force base/Casino circuit from Germany to Cyprus covering tunes by Supertramp, Meatloaf and Focus among others while devising their plan world domination focusing on original material. Their first album was a mixture of originals and cover tunes, perhaps because they were insecure over their own songs, but the group's second studio effort with the exception their interpretation of a classical warhorse was entirely a Canned Music affair and better for it I imagine, then again, maybe not.

The Songs
It's important to remember that this is an independent release recorded in the late 70's and therefore the production leaves a lot to be desired. The material is a mixture of 'Levelheaded' and 'Cut above the Rest' era Sweet with a smattering of prog rock and Queen minus the talent. Really, some of this album is quite hard to listen to. 'Captain, Captain' the albums single, reportedly banned from the BBC sounds like David Bowie on a bender, while 'Love Is Forever' swipes every move possible from Queen with an awful Brian May ripped guitar solo. Imitation here is not the sincerest form of flattery! The only redeeming track on the album is the closing instrumental, a cover of Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture' which isn't bad, but these guys were no ELP and their version lacks power in all the important areas with a crashing gong at the end that sounds like poor editing to me.

In Summary
So there you have it, a weak yet slightly interesting curio from the 70's British scene. Not essential of course and still relatively easy to find, plus Angel Air Records released 'Kinetic Energy' with the bands third album 'Machines'; on one disc not too long ago and copies of those can be found cheaply on the net. Was 'Machines' better than 'Kinetic Energy'? In a word, no and the group would release a live album before the band's guitarist/keyboard player was nearly electrocuted at a gig in Germany in the early 80's. The incident and lack of major label interest was enough for the group to smartly call it a day and as they say, the rest is history.
