Proudly proclaiming the re-emergence of true hard rock is Ernest Robert Boetz (pronounced Bets). Ernie to you and I. His motto is 'God Bless America, and long live rock n roll'. His recent album 'Call To Arms' is a throwback to the seventies, perhaps to that era when a guy like Pat Travers was big. Ernie hails from Atlanta, which is dab in the middle of R&B territory. So you gotta ask.. 'what's a white boy doing bashing out the blues in the hardest of fashion?' Doing what he knows best no doubt. Ernie did this one the hard way, on a 24 track analog no less. No fancy digital tools in the house! So when we talk about retro, he's the first person I'll think of in future. This reminds me a lot of the 707 comeback album from last year, which was in effect Kevin Russell playing blues based guitar rock.

The Songs
Adding to the retro feel is Motorhead's 'Lemmy', sounding as vocally 'pure' as always. He guests on the opening track 'Call To Arms', and it's thanks to Bob Kulick for getting him onboard. The AC/DC feel is evident on songs such as 'Weak In The Knees', and 'Don't Mean A Thing', and the excellent 'Almost To Scotland', where the AC/DC tribute is evident in the first line of the lyrics. The bit about the 'dirk blade' and 'claymore' leaves a lot to the imagination! You have to read it to understand what it means.. I won't say anything more than that. Hilarious.. 'Shinin' is a good solid hard rock workout, and you could even include the cover of 'Oh Boy' in there too, despite the relative shortness of it. 'Rock n Roll Is Good' is a slower paced blues infused track, and perhaps for me the pick of the bunch is 'Greenback Check'.. continuing the 'long live rock n roll' message.

In Summary
Ernie is a maverick. Thumbing his nose up at mainstream labels, and the contrived nature of the music scene in general. If harder blues based rock is your thing, then add 'Call To Arms' to the shopping list. Hey one last mention.. the website's pretty cool too. If anyone has seen the iMax movie production of 'The Haunted Castle' then the front index page to the site looks very similar to the hallway scene. Way cool Ernie..
