Background
Here we have a compilation which is exactly what it states. Fifteen tracks, ten from Moore's 70's excursion into fusion territory with Colosseum II and five from his solo 'Back On The Streets' solo album of 1978, highlighting Moore's dominating prowess of his chosen instrument. Moore joined the revamped Colosseum in 1975 after the original disbanded earlier in the decade, only to be revived by founder member, drummer Jon Hiseman. Colosseum II recorded three albums, 1976's 'Strange New Flesh', and 1977's 'Electric Savage' and 'Wardance', before folding in 1978. That's when Moore decided to branch out into solo territory, doing so with 'Back On The Streets'.


The Songs
Of the three Colosseum albums 'Strange New Flesh' goes unrepresented, while 'Electric Savage' and 'Wardance' both share five tracks. These fascinating slices of fusion, that mixed ballads with jazz and outright hard rock, display some of Moore's heaviest axe work of a once distinguished career. From 'Wardance' we have the title cut, 'Major Keys', 'Castles', 'Fighting Talk' and 'Starmaiden/Mysterioso/Quasar', while 'Electric Savage' features 'Put It This Way', 'All Skin And Bone', 'The Scorch', 'Lament' and 'Desperado'. Much of the music moves in the same way as Jeff Beck's 'Blow By Blow' and 'Wired', jazz tinged with typically 70's arrangements, particularly the use of the organ. 'Wardance' is an intriguing piece, conjuring up such images of an event, before descending into eerie serial killer type documentary music. I can imagine all sorts of shady events to this...'Castles' features a rare vocal on a Colosseum II track, a ballad which foreshadowed future attempts by Moore, quite at odds with rampaging Moore led bursts like 'Fighting Talk.' 'Major Keys' rips off Led Zeppelin's 'The Crunge' in the intro, but settles into an acceptably extreme jazz-funk direction to wash away such thoughts. There is a massive touch of progressive synths to open 'The Scorch', but Moore tears things apart with mindblowing soloing. All Colosseum selections are recommended nonetheless, all awesome displays of musicianship. The five 'Back On The Streets' choices are more predictable, you have the title track (still a firm favourite), 'Don't Believe A Word', 'Parisienne Walkways', 'Hurricane' and 'Song For Donna'. 'Hurricane' is noteworthy as it's a Colosseum style instrumental and curiously, faster than any of their cuts. Moore pushes his fingers to maximum speed here, and for 1978 this is some staunch heavy metal. 'Song For Donna' meanwhile is ballad fare, closer to the earlier 'Castles'.


In Summary
An impressive compilation, certainly not a rushed throwaway by any means. More importantly it showcases where Moore was at musically before his brief Thin Lizzy spell in 1979 and his later solo success in the 1980's and 90's. The man could put his talents to any shade of rock, and some of the work he laid down for Colosseum is of mind bending quality. This is the way to remember Gary Moore.

Up until 1990 and his blues turn was there a better overall guitar player than this guy?

Twas a pity he denouncing his 'rock years'. I was kinda pissed off with his comments. Esp after all the millions of dollars we fans ploughed into his product. Did he somehow think it was a big joke and did he take us for a fools ride for all those years? If he ever attempts a 'rock comeback', I'll be having my pound of flesh - believe you me! middle finger
