Eva (Italy) - 2000 Eva

Andrea Brusadelli - guitars, vocals

Having listened to a number of Italian pop/rock artists I have always been intrigued that many of them have verged on being AOR, mainly due to the great guitar work and melody conscious songs. I often wondered what would happen if an Italian group went for a straight ahead AOR sound and, thanks to Eva, the wondering is over. I can't tell you much about these guys other than they deserve a lot more attention than they've been getting.

The Songs
Vocalist Angelo Grassi is a dead-ringer for Peter Strykes from 1st Avenue and in general Eva do have a very similar sound to the Dutch group which bodes well. Eva's sound is driven by a combination of Andrea's stabbing riffs/sweeping solo's and Stefano's silky keyboards. In addition to those already strong points are the super smooth choruses. Just listen to opener 'Angel' and the vibrant 'Holdin' On' for perfect examples. The songs are given even greater life due to the amazing production job, perhaps the best I've ever heard from an indie group. It doesn't come as too great a surprise though as most Italian based albums are well produced.

In Summary
The term 'sensation' is often over used, but in this situation it is a fair description for this excellent Italian quintet. As the saying goes, 'Italians Do It Better', and that is certainly the case with Eva. The following year, Eva would sign with AOR Heaven/Point Music, with this album being retitled 'One' and made available to a wider listening audience. The band would go into hibernation for a few years, but returned in 2007 with a new album called 'Blue'.

Solid, enjoyable AOR release. Angelo Grassi always reminds me of Go West's Peter Cox for some reason, especially on the opening cut 'Angel'. Definately worthy of repeat listens, even if it doesn't completely blow the mind.
