Into The Light - 2000 Into The Light

Tim Donahue - guitars, bass, drum programming
Kelly Hansen - vocals

We have one severe talent on display here. The dexterity shown by guitarist Tim Donahue is something to be heard. A reputed master of the fretless guitar, and written up in numerous guitarist oriented publications, it's a treat to listen to his material, albeit with this Into The Light project being a mainstream heavy rock release, and not the erzatz jazz stylings he is more familiar with. Recruiting ex Hurricane singer Kelly Hansen, we get an eighties hard rock blast, musically similar to some of those great Christian projects from that period, a la Shout and Whitecross, probably a tribute to the likes of guitarists Ken Tamplin and Rex Carroll. There's a fair bit of diversity on show, but the acid test is on the songs, and thankfully there's not much fretboard widdly diddly but a whole hearted attempt to create interesting songs, and Tim and Kelly manage to do that with ease.

The Songs
The opener is an ass kicking introduction called 'No Turning Away' which to me sounded like Whitecross circa 'Triumphant Return', especially those double timed kick drum loops. The title track 'Into The Light' has a dreamy quality about it while the guitar riffs which chugs away on 'Time To Run' are just so cool! The instrumental 'Acceleron' is very similar to Doug Aldrich's solo material, which precedes the rollicking 'Skyrocket'. This one also has some variation on the time changes. One of my favourite tracks would have to be the accosutic ballad 'Live Today', the melodies are both simple and delicious. 'No Regrets' moves in the same vein as an accoustic piece. 'Tonight' has some elements of David Victor and Velocity stamped on it, while 'Alien Talk' is another instrumental which only just manages to retain some interest, due to it's off the wall soloing..

In Summary
If this is mean't to be an introduction to rock fans as to the talents of Tim Donahue, then Into The Light is just the vehicle to do so. I am summarily impressed. Great crunching stuff, and good also to see a reputable vocalist doing justice to the material. If I can say one thing Tim, a drummer like Mike Portnoy or Rod Morgenstein would have given you so much leverage on the arrangements. Perhaps next time, but in the mean time, I will enjoy.
