Background
We've seen it so many times before. An actor who decides that he/she can foot in the music industry. Whether its Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Rick Springfield, Bruce Willis, Roger Daltrey and a gazillion others, usually the trail is left littered with unsuccessful attempts but on occasion many have made the transition with ease. Some dabbled with the idea, left a few bits of evidence then scarpered back off to the land of the small screen and stage. One of these is German actor Uwe Ochsenknecht, who is reasonably well known given his wide range of performances on TV, film and the stage. Back in the early 90's, he left us with a couple of albums that left quite a few people impressed with his ability. This album, his debut, didn't feature a lot of original material, but the songs he chose are a good display of his range. Seems songwriting machine Mark Spiro was a chief inspiration here, as was Saga drummer Curt Cress, who produced the album. Other contributions from well-heeled musicians in the session scene are applied here as well.

The Songs
Leading out with 'Cruel Tears', this is a rousing track first heard on Heart's 1990 'Brigade' sessions, but released via a series of singles and B-sides rather than on the album itself. 'Only One Woman' is a cover of The Marbles 1968 hit featuring Graham Bonnet, though the song itself was written by Maurice and Barry Gibb. Swedish AORsters Alien also covered this in 1988. 'If I Had A Wish' has a very west-coast feel to it, along the lines of Venice and The Rembrandts. Not surprising as this was written by Chicago's Jason Scheff. My favourite track here is 'I Must Be Blind' - which is primetime AOR, and not far behind is the Kansas track 'One Man One Heart', another great rendition it must be said. The album features two notable Mark Spiro contributions. The rather awesome 'Midwestern Sky' and 'Better With A Broken Heart' (from 1997's 'Devotion' album). This song was also rebadged as 'Kari' on Stephen Bishop's classic 'Bowling In Paris' LP from 1989. Both versions here are tremendous. Adding some free-license to precedings is the party-anthem of 'Turn Me Loose' and the storming hard rock of 'Affection'.

In Summary
Despite the fact that more than half the tracks here can be heard on other albums, it does not detract from what is a damn fine AOR listen. Uwe followed this up with 1994's 'Girls Crossing' - another good effort but probably not as good as this one. I understand that there are at least two more albums that he has released beyond this pairing, however I am unware of the style and quality applied. Perhaps someone here can provide some insight into those ones? In the meantime, track this down if you can. Fans of Jim Jidhed and Mark Spiro styled AOR should pick this up without hesitation.

This really is one for the Spiro fans, no less than 8 tracks on here with his credits, some tracks I have before on MS albums some on other artists - A real treat this for all pure AOR fans. Also of note is 'Girl Crossing' his next disc.. Two other releases followed, O-Ton & Singer, but these aren't in the same class as the first two.
