Here's a great new addition on the Australian pop landscape. If you thought we were already inundated by the likes of pop gods Invertigo, and Killing Heidi, then along come another bunch of contenders called Square One. Originally starting life off as the band 40 Alexander (I think named after a certain Melbourne landmark.. Dok correct me if I'm wrong), they recently changed their handle to Square One, giving them a more accessible and commercial overview. Given the recent formal departure of Savage Garden, you could do well to mention Square One in the same breath, perhaps the next best thing since ..well.. Savage Garden?

The Songs
The six track demo I've been presented with is an extension of the 'Red Yellow and Blue' demo material previously put out by 40 Alexander, which contains four acoustic tracks, plus two studio tracks. The acoustic session is with Jason Old, the recently acquired new singer who was previously with local Melbourne AOR gods Safire, singing alongside guitarist Stevie Janevski (himself previously with Cyclone Tracy). The standouts are the obvious pairing of 'Hazy' and 'Rock n Roll Hysteria', both given to us as studio and acoustic/unplugged versions. Elsewhere the other tracks 'Dizzy Color Blind' and 'Free Flow Feeling' gives us a definite feel for the brand of modern pop we can expect when these guys break out in the studio.

In Summary
As 40 Alexander they supported Steve Vai across Australia, and completed a series of showcases. They are still very much a new band, but one with heaps of promise. More a predominantly pop band, their stated influences vary between the likes of Nelson, Queen, Cheap Trick, Jellyfish, Beatles, Def Leppard, and Winger. Whew! That's varied alright. Be interesting to see what an albums worth of material will sound like. I don't think you need to be a rocket scientist to know there is a promise here, and with 2002 around the corner and a new exciting band ready to launch themselves upon the pop world, Square One may already have the market cornered.
