Hear that sound? That was my jaw dropping to the floor after hearing 'Small', track two from a three song demo by Pittsburgh rockers Grapevine. Having already enjoyed success with debut album 'Star', Grapevine has recorded this demo as a taster of what's to come on the band's next album, and if the songs on here are anything to go by, it will definitely be worth the wait. It appears the band have built up quite a reputation in their native state, sharing management and the stage with well known rockers The Clarks. Despite this, the two are not to be confused - whereas The Clarks excel with their more middle of the road modern rock, Grapevine are a slamming, slightly alternative heavier band altogether, and possess a real talent in vocalist and guitarist Jean-Marc Azoury.

The Songs
The demo kicks off with 'Me And Miss America', a real rocky tune that delivers something different to the norm and benefits all the more for that. But as I've already mentioned, it's the second track 'Small' which really gives an idea of where Grapevine are headed and the more I hear this song, the more I am convinced it could be huge. The song deals with the emotive rejection of a son by his father and even though it begins with clever use of gentle acoustics and distorted vocals, 'Small' sounds quite the opposite of its title. The chorus rips in with some powerful production and guitar work to go alongside a brilliantly effective melody and it all adds up to make a stunning song - and remember, this is only a demo! Finally, 'I'm Awake' follows a similar pattern, building up to a very impressive chorus allowing the four guys in the band to stamp their formidable presence all over the song, especially Azoury with his soaring vocal work.

In Summary
The material is a bit of a departure to that which featured on the band's debut album and which gave them quite a bit of radio and internet success. However, the fact remains that if the guys can expand on what are three great songs, they will surely deliver one hell of an album and have A&R guys forming a disorderly queue around them. I for one can't wait.
