I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Sneaking into this website by a thread of a thread are Canadian band Boys Brigade. Released at a time when Canadian bands were starting to exert their testosterone to the world, Boys Brigade instead were taking their lead from British bands who were popular at the time. Think Spandau Ballet and their ilk, then you'd have a fair guess as to who Boys Brigade were emulating. They weren't as blazingly copy-cat in the new romantics genre as fellow countrymen Platinum Blonde were, and they did integrate some commercial (dare I say it AOR?) elements into their music. Boys Brigade started life off as a new wave band in Toronto, and found themselves on a Q107 Radio Station compilation later that same year. In time, their music became much more sophisticated, following in the footsteps of Men Without Hats, Strange Advance and the aforementioned Platinum Blonde.

The Songs
For their one-off album released on Anthem Records during 1983, there are a few Rush connections with this band. Their manager Howard Ungerleider was Rush's lighting designer, while Geddy Lee was bought in to produce the album. The band's first single 'The Passion of Love' had minor succes, but it was the track 'Melody', the followup single whih became a Top 40 hit in Canada. The song 'Into the Flow' made it onto the soundtrack of a Canadian movie called 'Heavenly Bodies', while a repeat of their Q107 contribution 'Mannequin' also appears on the album.

In Summary
The band never made it to a second album, the members fracturing before the sophomore stage. Of the members, Malcolm Burn went on to become a noted producer, Tony Lester spent some time with Strange Advance, while Wayne Lorenz went on to work with many artists over the years. Boys Brigade the album has never been released on CD, and in all likelihood will probably never make it either. A band who had a brief moment in the sun..

I initially found out about this band when I bought the Q107 Homegrown various artists compilation, which has their song 'Mannequin' on it. Along with the more well known album singles, 'Saigon', 'The Cut-Up' and 'Into The Flow' are very satisfying tracks. Straddling the AOR new wave rock line, this is an overall prime effort that upon release received a variety of positive reviews…and having Geddy Lee and Nick Blagona (Rolling Stones) involved, adds to the curiosity.
