Background
Somewhere within the vaults of G-DAZE, we have a review of a previous outing by Swedish musician Mikael Erlandsson. On that album ('Under The Sun' refer our 1996 reviews), Mikael was trying out for a Green Card, ie trying to play midwest jangly pop fit for the cornbelt of the USA. Seven years later, Mikael still has the blond hair, and is now aiming for the modern rock audience instead. In essence, capturing the market populated by the likes of John Waite, Glen Burtnick, The Rembrandts etc, but with an ebb/flow aproach prevalent with hard pop/modern rock styles. It works in some cases, but doesn't in others.

The Songs
For instance, tunes like 'Stay', 'This Is Your Life', 'I Love You' (very original songtitle huh?) and 'My Day' work real well, due to simple song structures, and hefty melodies. The heaviest Mikael gets is probably 'Excuse Me Baby', while the fast paced '24 Hours' is a real rabble rouser. For first impressions, the opening pair of 'Out Of Champagne' and 'Stop (Following Me)' do very little for my melodic rock craving. They probably should have been further down the track listing. As for 'Million Dollar Girl', admire the style and all, but there's something about this track which is a turn-off. 'Love's Got A Hold On Me' is a bit of filler, Vocally I was reminded of Tommy Shaw from Styx, and after their disappointing 'Cyclorama', anything must be better than that!

In Summary
An OK album, but I suspect it's gonna be appreciated by the new brigade of listeners, probably those who have just gone beyond puberty. It has many modern aspects to it, but unfortunately not enough glue to really interest hard rockers out there. As a result, all of the good moments wash over you, and then you find out before long you've reached the end of the disc. Not the worst disc out there, but not one of those albums which has 'classic melodic rock' stamped all over it either.
