Invertigo - 2001 Forum

Christian Argenti - vocals
James Leigh - guitars, keyboards
Gerry Leigh - guitar, vocals
Vincent Leigh - drums

Invertigo came about due to a classified advert placed by the Leigh brothers (James and Vince played with Pseudo Echo in the 80's). Christian Argenti answered the advert along with 100 others and landed the gig. However, it was not only Christian's vocal ability that got him the job. The guys got along famously, having a connection both on a personal and artistic level. Immediately the band recorded some demo's, enlisted producer Charles Fisher (Savage Garden, Hoodoo Gurus, Radio Birdmen) and set about recording their debut album. 'Forum' was finally released late 2001, but in Australia only. Since then, and even before its release thanks to a couple of advance top 40 hit singles, the stir that 'Forum' has created has been significant. Worldwide interest has been generated, with an international release forthcoming on Atlantic Records. This was supposed to be a couple of weeks ago according to their website. The band have since issued a statement saying they are unsure when the international release will be. Instead, they are working hard on a new album which they feel is more representative of where the band is at now, considering 'Forum' was recorded nearly three years ago. If it had been released sooner I'm sure Invertigo would have had a decent amount of success, giving them a good foundation for the next album.

The Songs
While the confusion about release dates is disappointing, and even annoying, the album itself is a spectacular collection of melodic poppy rock songs. The quartet are into it straight away with the immensely catchy 'Desensitized'. Hell of a chorus. 'Chances Are' and 'Man Enough' are a little less frantic but still full of melody and harmonies. Following on are 'Say You Do', a Backstreet Boys type ballad, and 'What If It's Me', sounding like a rocked up NSYNC. 'If I' is another ballad similar to fellow Aussie's Savage Garden, and SG also come to mind on 'Blame It On The Stars'. The guitars are turned up for the punchy 'It's Getting Personal'. There is a darker, heavier feel both lyrically and musically on 'Slave'. The guitar riff is very cool and rocks hard. 'Typical' is a mid-tempo semi-rocker with yet another memorable chorus. The final track 'Damage Control' ends just as we began - rocking. Like 'Desensitized' the chorus is huge.

In Summary
I won't bother beating around the bush - 'Forum' is pop/rock perfection. As for the next album, whatever Invertigo come up with 'Forum' is a very hard act to follow.
