I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Background
I have always had a spot soft for Dutch rock. From the psychedelic pop of Shocking Blue to the melodic sounds of Diesel and progressive classicism of Focus, the Dutch have contributed greatly to rock 'n' roll over the years and here we have a one-off album from members of Alquin and Golden Earring, two of Holland's most popular bands of the day. Rinus Gerritsen was and still is Golden Earring's bass player and composed all the material for this record. Teaming up with vocalist Michel Van Dijk from Alquin, one of the better Dutch prog bands to come down the dike and whose 'Mountain Queen' album I highly recommend, the duo delivered an album that didn't do very well in their native country, although it seemed to be enough to get it a US release under the Americanized title of 'Garrison and Van Dyke'.

The Songs
With artists from two very distinctive bands, the progressive side of Van Dijk's work loses out to the more straight ahead rock sounds of Gerritsen's Golden Earring. Yet not really AOR but very similar to the direction popularized by Cold Chisel, the duo plays a no frills rock with slight blues touches and if there is a problem with the album, it's with the material itself which doesn't hold a lot of variety. 'Rock And Roll Beast' the albums single, 'City Sunset' and 'New Shade Of Light' are very good taken on their own, but as a whole the record falls well short of classic status.

In Summary
Supposedly the aforementioned single has an unreleased 'b' side and is a highly collectable item. Not sure if it's any better than the record and I am not about to pay big money to find out.

In Holland, Dany Lademacher is wellknown as guitarist for 'enfant terrible' Herman Brood, who passed away in 2001. Drummer Shell Schellekens has worked with many Dutch bands and artists, including Vitesse, Powerplay, Valensia, Highway Chile, and many others.
