Beau Coup - 1987 Born And Raised On Rock n Roll

ARTIST: Beau Coup
ALBUM: Born And Raised On Rock 'n Roll
LABEL: Amherst
YEAR: 1987

LINEUP: Dennis Lewin - keyboards, drums, vocals * Tommy Amato - vocals * Frank Amato - vocals, percussion * Bill March - bass

TRACK LISTING: 01 Born And Raised On Rock 'n Roll * 02 Somewhere Out In The Night * 03 Find The Way * 04 Jane * 05 Sweet Rachel * 06 Uptown LA * 07 Still In My Heart * 08 Never Stop * 09 Hold On Me

Another of those mid-west combos that epitomised the best of hi-tech AOR. Beau Coup played very much in the style of Dakota, The Innocent, and Jonah Koslen. In fact, the Koslen influence is obvious with the talented Dennis Lewin having played with him on the Jonah And The Heroes project. This album is in fact their second album, the first was released in 1984, and a very rare piece of vinyl it is too! Unfortunately 'Born And Raised..' is also becoming difficult to find, and it is on a very small label based out of Buffalo NY.

The Songs
The strength of Beau Coup are their incredible harmony vocals backed by some rich instrumentation and musicianship. There are some wonderful moments on here like the gloriously pompous 'Jane' (how many greats songs are there by this name?), similarly 'Sweet Rachel' (man what a chorus!) in which the great Tim Pierce plays lead guitar, and the Dakota like AOR of 'Somewhere Out In The Night'. Some of the harder rock oriented songs also stand out, including 'Never Stop' and the all out rocker 'Hold On Me'. The quieter moments are represented on songs like 'Find The Way', also very reminiscent of prime time Dakota, while 'Still In My Heart' is a real tearjerker ballad.

In Summary
Not much heard of these guys collectively since this one, though there have been reports of some light activity out of their Ohio home base. The Amato brothers though have popped up from time to time on various projects. As of 2008, Beau Coup re-released some of their material in CD form, I think you can find it on CD Baby if you are looking hard for it.

Very consistent throughout with a strong set of material, well played by all involved. That being said, this is very 'Lite' in places and besides the title track doesn't really rock out until the most excellent 'Never Stop' kicks in at track 8. Still, a compulsory release in the AOR field, if you can track it down

Here is the Wikpedia page relating to the late great Jane Scott, rock critic extraordinare from Cleveland OH. The song 'Jane' is dedicated to her.

This was originally going to be released on the Scotti Brothers label but the deal fell through. I think their manager was at fault somehow or another. It would have been great to see what a real record label could have done with this record. I know the band was broken hearted about losing the deal but they should have waited it out for another big record label.
