Background
I can't really argue with the Bio that came along with Black Knight's 'Tales of the Darkside'. It stated that 'Amsterdam based Black Knight originate from the early eighties when heavy metal was at it's peak'. Although this album was released in 1998 it could easily have come from that golden era when the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Queensryche ruled the land.


The Songs
Drawing heavily upon the influence of the aforementioned bands, Black Knight has churned out nine tracks that proudly state their power metal upbringing. Vocalist Pieter has an uncanny resemblance to early Geoff Tate, showing great ability and range. The twin guitar combination of Gertjan and Richard makes you punch your fist in the air and throw your head violently back and forth. Along with their powerful rhythm work the lead breaks are also very impressive. It's not easy to combine speed and feeling, but they manage it well. Special mention also has to be made of the fantastic production.


In Summary
While great acts such as Hammerfall and Nocturnal Rites continue to attract most of the attention within the power metal genre, it is important that we acknowledge those lesser known bands that deserve a shot at the big time. Black Knight are definitely one of those bands.
