Consummate melodic rock from this Swedish outfit which really did cause a stir in 1988, as did just about every other notable Swedish outfit from that era. Goodness, Joey Tempest and Europe really do have a lot to answer for don't they? On Alien's debut they feature the twin vocal talent of Jim Jidhed and Pete Sandberg. The other notable fact with this album is the support provided by the team of Janet Minto and Pam Barlow, who would later find fame with MTM signing Fake ID. Both in terms of co-writes and backing vocals.

The Songs
There are many moments on this album which could be considered standouts. Having them all assembled under one album is an absolute bonus. Trademark Scandinavian melodic rock shines through on tracks like 'Go Easy' and 'Jaime Remember', while the slow to mid paced arrangements of 'Tears Don't Put Out The Fire' and the classy 'I've Been Waiting' also stand out. Alien's better remembered moment was the re-work of the The Marbles single 'Only One Woman' which did very well for them. Another cover was recorded, this being The Hollies 'The Air That I Breathe'. Topping that are some pompous moments such as 'Brave New World' and the Magnum sounding 'Touch My Fire'. They finish up with the guitar driven fury of 'Now Love', which could be Treat revisited.

In Summary
This album is probably the pick of their collection. 'Shiftin' Gear', 'Alien III' and 'Crash' are nowhere near as good, due to change in personnel and musical styles. One to consider perhaps as a catch all would be their 'Best And Rare' CD which came out in 1997. That would give you a great cross-section of their material.

One of the best albums in AOR history! Great catchy songs, perfect arrangements. What else could have someone asked for? A must have for those who consider themselves friends of good music. This is the album that I would play to someone in order to show him what AOR is all about and what is the kind of music I love! 10/10...being strict!

I can't believe this usa version of the album omitted 'Dreamer'? That was the best song on the album i thought (even if i don't much like the twiddly metal solo- which is no doubt technically profound) along with piano epic 'Mirror' (which is probably my second favourite song!). Are there other reasons to get this usa version apart from the two different songs? I seem to remember reading somewhere that as well as the couple of new songs added (in exchange for Dreamer and Mirror it would seem) that it was remixed or vocals were re-recorded on some songs or something like that? As for new tracks, i didn't so far like their version of 'The Air That I Breathe' much (which i've played several times on youtube). Sounds like something a silly record label person forced on them because they had that wild card cover of 'Only One Woman' (which had been a hit in Sweden) on the original version of the album. I don't recall yet listening to 'Now Love' on the other hand. Guess it shall be over to youtube now..

And I have a factory pressed cd of this (the original european version of the album) i got a few years back from Greece which has the disc face all-green coloured. However it doesn't seem to be the official(?) 'No remorse' records Greek version (it's instead credited to virgin (C) and (P) 1988) so i think it's a silver counterfeit. Oh well. Despite a flat production there are definitely some other pretty good songs on this album. I was also a big fan of The Blob remake as a kid so i guess i've technically been listening to Alien for around 25 years
