During the late 80's, Canadian band were Syre doing their best to ignite audiences all across the maple-leaf divide, as hair metal acts were prominent during that period. From Winnipeg, this five-piece could easily compare to fellow Canucks Helix with their party metal antics, while on the other hand, they dabble in keyboards which adds an Orphan, Wall Of Silence/The Works and Danger Danger like component to their sound.

The Songs
There are some great tunes here, the emphasis on solid riffing, stinging lead guitar work and great harmony vocals. Lead off 'Flaunt It' is the band's signature live tune, and predictably takes a prominent place on the album's track listing. 'Say Hi To My Girlfriend' is full of sexual innuendo amid the high stakes rock and rollin' delivery. 'Can't Believe I'm With You' is stuck between the antics of Helix and Twisted Sister, without being as 'in your face' as those two. The lyrics and vocal delivery has a Dee Snider quality about it. For me, probably the stand out track is the excellent racy AOR of 'You Never Looked Back', there are no traces of hair metal on this one.. lol! 'Summertime' as the title would suggest, is a bright and happy sounding tune celebrating the season in the sun, with a bash-tapping piano taking up a prominent role in the song. Friday's Smile' kicks off with a great riff that is upheld throughout the song. Again, it has that party vibe, with a kicker chorus to boot. 'The Way You're Lookin' Tonight' is that typical Saturday night 'out on the town' celebration, where boy meet girl for a bit of fun and excitement. 'Never Said Goodbye' features a wealth of keyboards, a very melodic effort similar to the obscure Kansas AOR/hard rock band - The Heat. 'In Your Eyes' contains shimmering guitar lines and a pumping bass line which is near enough to AOR quality. The band finish on a party anthem with 'Ain't Seen Nothin'. Lots of party and good time references throughout, so not surprising there! Listening to this, you can just imagine if Syre and Helix were double-billed, that it would be a pretty good night out for all concerned.

In Summary
The band did release further material into the 90's, but as an unsigned outfit only. A series of outtakes and demos appeared on a disc entitled 'Pissed To The Gills' (the cover art for this hilarious!), much of which featured the talent of Brian Malone and Jim Huff from the aforementioned Wall Of Silence. The band reunited recently for a 20th anniversary bash, but it will not result in the reformation of the band, as all the band members are involved with other bands and projects. 'It Ain't Pretty Being Easy' is a fun album, and taken with a grain a salt, is best left in the era that celebrated hair metal, though to be fair, the melodic hard rock songs here are pretty good.
